Program Description

The Eastern Hemisphere — stretching from the Indian subcontinent across East Asia and Southeast Asia to the Pacific Ocean — has become the central arena of global economic dynamism and geopolitical competition in the 21st century. This vast region, often referred to as the Indo-Pacific, encompasses many of the world’s fastest-growing economies, most dynamic cities, and critical maritime trade routes.

Home to more than half of the world’s population and a large share of global economic output, the Eastern Hemisphere sits at the heart of the modern global economy. The region includes major economic powers such as China, Japan, India, and South Korea, as well as rapidly growing economies in Southeast Asia.

At the same time, the Indo-Pacific and the often-overlooked Pacific Island nations has emerged as the focal point of strategic competition among major powers. China’s economic rise and military modernization and assertiveness have reshaped regional dynamics, while the United States and its allies have sought to strengthen partnerships and institutions to maintain stability, open sea lanes, and a rules-based regional order.

Understanding the Eastern Hemisphere therefore requires examining the economic networks, security alliances, technological competition, and maritime geography that define the Indo-Pacific system. This special one-day program brings together experts in diplomacy, economics, security, and geopolitics to explore the evolving dynamics of the Eastern Hemisphere and its growing importance in global affairs.

• The Economic and Strategic Role of Japan, South Korea, and Australia
• Pacific Island States and the Geopolitics of the Pacific Ocean
• Trade, Infrastructure, and the Future of Indo-Pacific Connectivity
